The Daily Brief

Monday closed on a markets rally that outran the diplomacy — Palantir printed an otherworldly quarter, the Dow notched a record, and oil eased — while Tehran denied the talks Trump called a last chance and a Ukrainian drone killed seven on a Russian beach.
A coalition of 25 Democratic-led states asked the U.S. Court of International Trade to block and refund new 10–12.5% tariffs on goods from 60 trading partners. They argue the administration is using Section 301 of the Trade Act to recreate sweeping duties already rejected by the Supreme Court and the trade court earlier this year.
More than a million square miles of Pacific marine national monuments and sanctuaries — remote atolls like Palmyra that anchor coral reefs and seabird colonies — are being opened to commercial fishing under the Trump administration. Scientists describe the monuments as among the last near-pristine ocean ecosystems left, and the rollback has set up a fight over how the U.S. manages its largest conservation areas.
Contractors racing to finish wall segments backed by more than $46 billion in federal funding were ordered to stop drilling new groundwater wells after ranchers warned concrete production could drain aquifers already stressed by severe drought. Similar construction fights have flared in Texas and California.
Oil fell even as Iran–Oman talks over a temporary commercial route through Hormuz stayed unsettled. Kpler and others said crude shipping risk was as high as at any point in the war, Houthi strikes had reset the board, and Hapag-Lloyd estimated three to four months to restore normal flows even after a brisk reopening.
After Trump said talks would resume Monday, Tehran denied negotiations and he branded Iranian leaders “unbelievably duplicitous,” vowing to blockade until “a Deal, or Total Surrender.” CFR’s take: both sides are matching escalation, and if talks return Tehran will try to define the terms while pursuing a “pressure points” strategy on Hormuz.
Verified video shows a drone slamming into a fireball on a crowded Black Sea beach near Arkhipo-Osipovka; seven died including three children, with about forty injured. Russia called it a deliberate civilian strike; Ukraine has not commented, and some accounts claim jamming or air defenses may have diverted the craft. No sirens sounded beforehand.
After the dollar bought nearly 164 yen — the weakest since 1986 — Treasury joined Japan in a coordinated backstop, selling euros rather than dumping U.S. bonds. Bessent wants wider use of the Fed’s FIMA repo facility so Tokyo can pledge Treasurys instead of selling them, protecting yields as much as the yen after the carry trade broke down.
Japan’s 598-page defense white paper, adopted Tuesday, calls China the biggest strategic challenge and puts combat drones plus A.I. at the center of coastal defense, drawing lessons from Ukraine and the Middle East. Four makers advanced into navy testing under a rapid program Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has framed as a speed race.
Palantir beat hard: $1.94B revenue (+93% YoY) vs $1.80B expected, adjusted EPS 41 cents vs 35 cents, and U.S. commercial revenue +149% to $764M with remaining U.S. commercial deal value above $6B. Full-year revenue guidance jumped to about $8.15–8.16B from roughly $7.65B; shares, still down ~29% YTD before the print, spiked about 12% after hours.
The FAA certified the 737 Max 7 after nearly a decade of safety reviews, requiring changes beyond engine anti-ice to flight-control software and crew alerting. Southwest holds most of the built inventory and still needs cabin work before passengers fly; the larger Max 10 remains uncertified. Roughly forty Max 7/10 airframes in inventory can finally start converting to cash.
Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet booked sizable paper gains on private A.I. stakes (and in one case SpaceX) that padded the headline S&P 500 earnings boom. LSEG put quarterly earnings growth above 48%; strip those investment marks and growth looks closer to 29% — a less frothy read on underlying operations.
Auterion’s Skynode S kits are going onto Ukrainian SkyFall Shrike FPV drones under a deal aimed at about 50,000 units. Operators fly into the area, designate a target out to roughly half a mile, then switch to fire-and-forget terminal guidance — autonomy hardware on a ~$400 airframe already known for hitting armor and even helicopters.
Snap’s Q2 revenue rose 19% to beat estimates; adjusted earnings hit $250M vs ~$192M expected, and Q3 sales guidance of $1.7–1.74B topped the Street. Spiegel cited improving large-advertiser momentum in North America even as regional DAUs fell 7% YoY; Snapchat+ and other revenue jumped 85%, while full-year infra spend guidance rose $50M on A.I. and machine-learning investment.
AI Act transparency obligations that took effect August 2 require providers and deployers to disclose chatbot interactions and mark A.I.-generated or altered content, including deepfakes. The Commission is pushing optional standard icons so labels look consistent across platforms if companies adopt them.
The famous incompetence-confidence curve may be regression to the mean wearing a lab coat.

@shuv1337 voice mode plus codex remote works until two sessions touch the same files and you can't see the diff while driving. that's exactly the parallel agent problem the disciplined loop is meant to solve, worktrees and all
for shits and giggles, i created a subagent skill yesterday, instructing pi to spawn itself in interactive mode, while watching the session file for the final assistant message. i forgot about it.
now sol is using the skill all the time to spawn review agents. RL goes hard.
every company is publishing random ai benchmarks because they're desperately looking for some way to market their product
it's useless noise. no one working on the things they're benchmarking pay any attention to them
Gave department presentation about my work using IPsec to lock-down peer communication between tens of thousands of our clients and the implementation package we're building for our ecosystem so they can do the same thing with a validated framework.
What I work on these days...
The implementation ~fundamentals~ of IPsec on Windows Firewall are straightforward, but troubleshooting edge cases and layering it onto an existing network can take finesse. We do several custom tricks with the Registry CSE and Client-Side Targeting for micro management.
