The Daily Brief

Sunday, July 26, 2026 · Evening Edition"All the bits fit to print"brief.shuv.me

Sunday closed with the Berlin Pride manhunt ended in a police shooting, a deadly food-festival attack beside Seattle’s Space Needle, and oil giving back roughly five percent as the U.S.–Iran pause held a second day — while Shanghai’s CXMT DRAM IPO ripped hundreds of percent higher and privacy circles lit up over a GrapheneOS phone-wipe prosecution.

Multiple people shot as gunfire erupts near Seattle’s iconic Space Needle, police say

AP ·Sun evening

Two people were killed and five wounded Sunday evening when gunfire erupted around 6 p.m. at Seattle Center during the Bite of Seattle food festival near the Space Needle. Harborview admitted four victims including a toddler; one patient was in critical condition as police locked down the complex and urged people to stay clear.

Oil prices ease after US and Iran pause their attacks

AP ·Sun

Brent for September delivery dropped about 4.9% to $92 early Sunday after a second day without U.S.–Iran strikes in the Gulf, extending Friday’s slide from last week’s brief touch near $102. Hormuz traffic remains the market’s hinge; U.S. regular gasoline still averaged about $4.11 a gallon, up from $3.90 a month earlier.

Senate Democrat’s new bills would restrict AI-powered ads and paid influencers

Semafor ·Sun

Sen. Adam Schiff plans two bills Monday: one forcing political committees to label paid influencer posts, and an AI Ads Act barring fraudulent AI likenesses of candidates. The push follows California races where unlabeled influencer spend and synthetic content flooded primaries, including heavy Steyer-backed influencer payouts under state disclosure rules Schiff wants mirrored federally.

Berlin Pride attack suspect shot and killed during police operation

BBC ·Sun

Police shot dead Abdul Ballout, 21, after he rushed officers with a knife in Spandau, ending a day-long manhunt for the suspect in Saturday’s van-ramming near Tiergarten that killed one woman and injured at least 29. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt called it a likely Islamist terror attack; prosecutors say Ballout had sought to join IS in 2025, served time in Lebanon, and this May received a deferred sentence in Germany for preparing a serious act of violence.

Indonesia central bank chief resigns

FT ·Mon open

Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo, in the post since 2018, resigned; authorities named economist Destry Damayanti acting chief in a move markets read as continuity, even as analysts flagged fresh scrutiny on policy direction and central-bank independence.

Russia and Ukraine trade attacks, killing 10, including child in Chernihiv

Al Jazeera ·Sun

Russian ballistic and other strikes killed at least six in Ukraine on Sunday, including a child at a supermarket in Chernihiv and attacks that reached Kyiv, while Moscow said a Ukrainian drone strike killed four in occupied Horlivka — another bloody day of reciprocal deep strikes.

China memory chipmaker CXMT skyrockets 500% in blockbuster Shanghai debut

CNBC ·Mon open

Changxin Technology Group (CXMT) shares jumped about 470% on their STAR Market debut, briefly valuing China’s DRAM challenger near 3.3 trillion yuan after an 8.6 billion dollar IPO — Asia’s largest this year. The Hefei firm held roughly 7.7% of global DRAM sales late last year and says proceeds will fund wafer mass production as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron still dominate.

Oil slides 5% as Iran reportedly signals halt to attacks if U.S. pause holds

CNBC ·Sun night

Brent fell about 4.9% toward $92 and WTI over 5% to about $85 after a senior Iranian official told Reuters Tehran would keep a reciprocal pause — “attack for attack” — if U.S. strikes stay suspended. The pullback extends Friday’s drop from last week’s spike above $100 as Washington’s bombing halt, reportedly tied partly to stockpile and target constraints, holds for a second day.

Singapore tightens monetary policy in surprise move as rising oil prices rekindle inflation risk

CNBC ·Mon

The Monetary Authority of Singapore unexpectedly steepened the slope of its dollar NEER policy band for a second straight meeting — a smaller step than April’s — defying economist calls for a hold. Import-dependent Singapore is leaning pre-emptively against oil-driven inflation even while domestic price pressures stay relatively soft and Q2 growth looks resilient.

The US is charging an American citizen for wiping his phone at the border

The Verge ·Sun

Prosecutors charged U.S. citizen Sam Tunick over an alleged GrapheneOS duress password that wiped his phone when agents seized it at Atlanta’s airport in January 2025. The government invokes a rarely used evidence-destruction statute; his lawyers call the child-exploitation framing a pretext to dig into Stop Cop City ties — a case now lighting up Hacker News and privacy circles.

Here are the 3 big things we're watching in the stock market in the week ahead

CNBC ·Sun

The tape’s next test is a stacked earnings week — Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Apple among the hyperscalers after Alphabet — plus the Fed’s July meeting under rekindled Middle East oil risk. Aerospace names like Boeing head into prints still trading the inverse oil shock from the Iran fight, with free-cash-flow guidance the tell for how much of the war premium sticks.

First teaser for Apple TV's Neuromancer debuts at SDCC

Ars Technica ·Sat/Sun

Apple TV dropped a minute-long Neuromancer teaser at San Diego Comic-Con, adapting William Gibson’s 1984 cyberpunk novel into the platform’s growing sci-fi slate beside Severance, Foundation, and Murderbot. Comic-Con also rolled Carrie, Dark Matter S2, and more casting noise — a reminder the streaming arms race is still fought on prestige genre IP.

interesting, thanks! the most interesting part for me is the coordination mechanism, i was thinking of doing something similar but in raw pi, no codex involved. (although using codex as a read only coordinator that spawns pi threads in herdr could be cool; implementation etc happens in pi harness with full control, but uou can drive it from codex when AFK

@shuv1337 @OpenAI for DevDay, I’d stay around Yerba Buena / Union Square: easy walk to Moscone, but still good for dinners after sessions. St. Regis is the polished walk-to-venue option; Beacon Grand is the more characterful alternative.
