Sunday closed on a near-record Spider-Man opening — $355 million, two million shy of Endgame — while Ukraine pushed long-range strikes deep into Russia, Gaza strikes continued after a fragile disarmament outline, and the Iran pause left Hormuz still unsettled.
Sony and Marvel’s latest Spider-Man film opened to an estimated $355 million in North America — just $2 million shy of Avengers: Endgame’s all-time record — after a $169 million Friday that itself topped Endgame’s first day. Tom Holland’s Brand New Day also shrugged off a multi-hour bootleg leak online; Nolan’s The Odyssey slipped to second for the weekend with $51 million.
Three people were killed and seven injured, some critically, in a Saturday afternoon shooting at an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho. Police found the suspected gunman dead nearby, said the community threat was over, and were still identifying victims and motive after a chaotic scene in a busy shopping plaza around 2 p.m.
AP-NORC finds Americans less proud of the country’s history and how its democracy works than a decade ago, with declines since 2017 across military strength and global influence as well. Separate Gallup polling puts those “extremely” or “very” proud to be American at 53%, a low in a series dating to 2001, even as most still say being American is central to their identity.
A small-business adviser reports that tariffs have faded from client agendas after the latest round landed mostly in the 10–12.5% range — far below last year’s Liberation Day spikes and China peaks near 145%. Refunds from prior levies and narrower product coverage have made the new wave feel manageable compared with the shock of 2025.
President Zelensky said overnight strikes hit the Engels strategic airfield and a Saratov-region oil refinery some 600 km inside Russia, plus a Kaluga oil depot — framing them as “long-range sanctions.” Russia reported eight killed, claimed 635 drones downed, and said another Wildberries warehouse was hit; Moscow also struck Ukrainian ports and vessels in the Black Sea.
Gaza officials said Israeli strikes on Gaza City, Khan Younis, and Deir el-Balah killed at least 13 people, including children — a second straight night of attacks days after Hamas accepted a disarmament plan tied to Trump’s Board of Peace. The IDF said it killed Hamas operatives; Israel’s energy minister said no deal exists to stop strikes and floated full Israeli control if Hamas does not disarm.
Rescuers recovered British-Nepali climber Nirmal “Nims” Purja’s body around 5,700 m on Broad Peak, with three more bodies sighted nearby. Purja, 43, famed for summiting all 14 eight-thousanders in just over six months in 2019, was among ten killed in Saturday’s avalanche; Prince William and Nepal’s prime minister were among those paying tribute.
Two firefighting helicopters collided near Psatha, about 65 km west of Athens; video shows one striking the other’s rotors before both fell into a ravine. Two of four crew were found unconscious and two lightly hurt as Greece battles multiple blazes fanned by strong winds, part of a wider European heat-driven fire season.
Dewardric McNeal argues Washington is reacting to a Chinese multi-lab ecosystem — DeepSeek, Moonshot’s Kimi K3, Alibaba’s Qwen, Tencent Hunyuan, Zhipu, MiniMax — that repeatedly hits frontier capability, not a single shock model. The piece says that breadth should worry policymakers and allies more than any one benchmark score.
Blowout earnings from Exxon, Chevron, and Valero underscored how Hormuz disruption minted short-term oil and refiner profits; volatility and refiner ETFs were six-month winners. Strategists caution that geopolitics is a hard long-term thesis and point investors toward other energy themes once the shock fades.
Goldman’s equities revenue surged 72% to a record $7.42 billion last quarter as volatility and a cross-sell push from banking and wealth into markets paid off; FICC rose 32% and investment banking 55% on deals including SpaceX and Alphabet’s raise. The firm is positioned for one of its best trading years ever if the tape stays lively.
Student protests after a leaked competitive-exam paper are the spark; economists say the fuel is scarce secure, well-paid jobs for the world’s largest youth cohort. Ultra-competitive exams gatekeep limited good posts, turning each scandal into a referendum on Modi’s growth story versus graduate unemployment.
U.S. airfares in June ran 26.5% above a year earlier even as carriers expect fuel bills to jump by billions on the Iran war. Airline executives told Wall Street they still see pricing power through year-end; passengers report once-cheap routes now costing hundreds more in economy.
Steve Huffman told investors Reddit is the “antidote to an automated web” as AI floods the internet with summaries, and said AI Overviews have yet to create the ecosystem win that ten blue links did. The comments land as Reddit weighs the future of its Google licensing deal and shares slide.
First time I've noticed this: I was eating outside at a Hawaiian restaurant and they had music piping into the courtyard - generic songs about being at the beach
A little TOO generic... it turned out Shazam could identify none of then
Slop.
"Honolulu’s airport has started playing 17 island-themed, AI-generated songs on rotation, according to state transportation spokeswoman Shelly Kunishige."
people want to dunk on this by saying their weekend harness does better on some dumb one shot benchmark
but at scale this is true. these tools are complicated and must factor in user behavior. you do not even understand what this means unless you have a huge user base sending you data
all of that gets sent as feedback to the model which gets trained into specific behavior
recommended reading. if we get "stuck" with improvements in verifiable domains only (which makes sense from a data point of view), i'm already a very happy camper, as that includes a lot of STEM.
Be suspicious of people who don't have a meaningful relationship with their car. Spending that much time that intimately with something is supposed to inspire identification and fealty.
Them: "How can you oppose Mamdani's policies to increase housing?"
Me: "Because they will do the opposite".
Rent control, freezes, stabilization destroy housing. That they hurt more than help is one of the things that economists most agree upon.
