The Daily Brief

Saturday, July 25, 2026"All the bits fit to print"brief.shuv.me

Troy Jackson secures Democratic nomination for Maine Senate seat after chaotic primary

Guardian ·16m

Maine Democrats reset a scandal-torn Senate primary on Saturday, nominating progressive fifth-generation logger and former state senate president Troy Jackson at a special convention in Bangor. He replaces oysterman Graham Platner, who quit after a Politico report on a sexual-assault allegation he denies, clearing a path before the July 27 ballot deadline; Jackson won 566 of nearly 600 delegates after rivals including Shenna Bellows stepped aside and will face Susan Collins.

The bridge is up but the party is off: U.S. and Canada skip joint ribbon-cutting

NPR ·4h

The Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit and Windsor is built to speed cross-border trade, but the U.S. and Canada are opening it without a joint celebration as tariff fights and wildfire smoke strain the relationship. The muted debut underscores how quickly North American infrastructure goodwill has cooled under trade friction.

Democrats Vote to Put South Carolina First in 2028 Primary

NYT ·17h

Democrats locked in South Carolina as the first 2028 presidential primary state, joined early by Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Michigan and Virginia — a calendar that keeps the party’s diversified early map after the Biden-era reshuffle.

Guardian ·42m

Firefighters entering a Grand Haven Township house Friday found eight relatives dead — two adults and six children ages five to fifteen — with some showing gunshot wounds. Authorities say they are not seeking outside suspects so far; Michigan state police arson investigators joined as autopsies proceed this weekend.

More than 250,000 people flee wildfires in France and Spain

Guardian ·1h

Evacuations across southwest France and Spain topped 250,000 as winds drove blazes toward Bordeaux and smoke triggered health warnings around Madrid — a clear step up from Friday’s tallies. France is accelerating a military Airbus A400M into firefighting duty; drought markers are stark, with stretches of the Loire at historic lows and many small streams dry.

India’s education minister resigns in victory for Cockroach youth movement protests

Guardian ·2h

Dharmendra Pradhan quit after a week of nationwide student protests led by the Cockroach Janata party over exam-leak scandals that forced mass retests and have been tied to more than a dozen suicides. It is the first time street pressure has ousted one of Narendra Modi’s ministers in twelve years; organizers paused sit-ins but pledged a wider push for education reform and accountability.

Canadian Intern at NATO Military HQ Is Arrested on Suspicion of Spying

NYT ·4h

Belgian authorities arrested a Canadian intern at NATO’s military headquarters on suspicion of spying; officials described the woman as “of Chinese origin” without naming the alleged client state. The case lands amid heightened alliance concern over insider access at HQ.

Saudi military strikes Houthi targets in Yemen after Red Sea tanker attacks

CNBC ·6h

Saudi-led coalition forces struck Houthi military sites used against Red Sea shipping after the Iran-backed group claimed attacks on two Saudi oil tankers; Saudi air defenses reportedly intercepted two ballistic missiles from Yemen. Trump said Thursday the U.S. would hold Iran responsible for further Houthi strikes, framing a second front alongside the wider Iran conflict.

Markets, Science & Tech

From Silicon Valley to DC, the tech world is suddenly obsessed with one concept in AI: Distillation

CNBC ·4h

Distillation — training smaller models to inherit capability from frontier systems — jumped from research jargon to Capitol Hill after Moonshot’s Kimi K3 looked competitive with top U.S. models as a cheap open-weight download. Jeff Dean has long called it essential for efficient deployment; officials now debate whether it lets Chinese labs leapfrog export controls, just as Nvidia, Microsoft and Meta urged against “premature restrictions” on open weights.

DeepSeek Said to Tell Backers of Funding Pause After Viral Posts

Bloomberg ·1h

DeepSeek verbally told prospective second-round investors it is suspending the deal for now, people familiar said, days after comments widely attributed to founder Liang Wenfeng on U.S.–China AI competition went viral. The lab raised about $7 billion in a June first close; frustration over leaked investor-meeting color is cited as part of the freeze, with a possible later restart.

Analysis: A powerful new coalition of AI skeptics is coalescing right in Trump's blind spot

CNBC ·4h

Evangelicals, labor unions, and local anti-data-center activists are forming an unusual coalition worried about AI’s pace, power demand, and labor shock — a political blind spot for Trump even as he touts developer pledges not to raise electricity rates. The analysis argues midterm risk rises if voters cast AI buildout as a giveaway to tech over households.

Finland’s radical answer to renewable energy’s biggest headache: The world’s largest sand battery

CNBC ·10h

Pornainen’s commercial sand battery — 13 meters tall, 2,000 tons of crushed soapstone — stores about 100 MWh of heat, covering nearly a month of the town’s summer district-heating demand and a week in winter. Polar Night Energy says the system cut heating-network emissions ~70% and wood-chip use ~60%, pitching rare-earth-free thermal storage as the intermittency fix renewables need at scale.

Musk's bad week: Tesla suffers worst slump since 2022, SpaceX drops ahead of Starship test

CNBC ·18h

Tesla fell about 18% on the week to $313 after a cash-flow-negative quarter driven by robotaxi, humanoid, and chip-fab spend; SpaceX slipped ~7% to $115 ahead of Friday’s post-IPO Starship flight. Combined moves erased roughly $130 billion of Musk’s wealth — he posted “(Former) trillionaire” — with Tesla now down ~30% year-to-date among mega-caps.

Logistics giants race cold-chain buildout as GLP-1 demand surges

CNBC ·4h

UPS, FedEx and peers are pouring capital into refrigerated pharma logistics as injectable GLP-1s like Ozempic and Zepbound require cold chain end-to-end; UPS alone flagged a $48 million temperature-controlled facilities push. With Gallup putting 11% of Americans on GLP-1s, healthcare is among the fastest-growing logistics segments through the early 2030s.

You can't copy an image in an Outlook draft email, and save it to your computer anymore. We have fallen so far from heaven. We don't even have OS-level understandings of clipboard contents anymore.

Claude Opus 5 is now available in Perplexity and Perplexity Computer. We evaluated it against six other models on WANDR. It outperformed all but Fable 5, while being 57% cheaper. https://t.co/78KJEUY2Xx

for those of you that have very serious applications deployed on cloudflare, do you really manage it all with a wrangler config?

here's where i'm stuck - wrangler envs seem a bit like a hack, doesn't feel like a reliable way to maintain dev, prod, etc - the rest of our system uses IaC, we already store secrets somewhere that it can orchestrate - trying to do everything with IaC isn't fun because some things we need are wrangler only still should we spawn wrangler with our IaC...?

for a non-coding product aimed at artists, i know that translations are super important. i'm unsure if the same is true for coding tools? would love insights.
