Overnight, the AI buildout stopped looking abstract: data centers turned into campaign material, AI capex hit Alibaba’s profit, Micron’s boom reshaped Boise, and the day ahead runs through oil, long bonds, and a few hard geopolitical edges.
AI data centers have become a midterm issue rather than a purely technical buildout story: CNBC reports that opposition is now bipartisan in several states, with candidates tying the facilities to water use, electricity bills, and job fears. Florida Republican Byron Donalds won his primary while proposing data-center restrictions despite backing from AI PACs, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro signed an executive order imposing tougher standards on new projects.
The USS George Washington is now operating in the Middle East, relieving the USS Abraham Lincoln after a deployment that included more than 250 uninterrupted days at sea. AP says the switch follows reports of crew stress, poor mental health, and supply shortages aboard the Lincoln while it supported the Iran war, with lawmakers pressing the Pentagon for accountability.
Hawaii is still clearing mud, rock, and power outages from Hurricane Lala while forecasters watch another tropical system expected to pass near or south of the Big Island this weekend. AP reports nearly 15,000 homes and businesses remained without electricity Thursday, with warnings of up to 15 inches of rain, life-threatening flooding, mudslides, and rip currents.
The first 20 deportees arrived in Liberia under a U.S. deal that could send 1,200 people to the West African country, one of the largest third-country deportation arrangements of Trump’s immigration crackdown. Liberia says the group can seek asylum there; immigration lawyers argue the program is being used as a loophole to push people toward countries they may have no connection to.
A Chinese court sentenced Evergrande founder Hui Ka Yan to life in prison, marking a hard endpoint for the tycoon whose company collapsed under more than $300 billion in liabilities. NPR frames the ruling as a milestone in China’s long property bust, with Evergrande’s fall still rippling through homeowners, creditors, and local-government finances.
Israel’s military confirmed for the first time that its troops fired on the car carrying five-year-old Hind Rajab, who was killed in Gaza with six relatives in 2024 after pleading for help by phone. The IDF says military police will open a criminal investigation into alleged coordination failures around the ambulance sent to rescue her, whose two paramedics were also killed.
More than 100 people died when an artisanal gold mine collapsed after a landslide in western Central African Republic, near the Cameroon border. Local officials and aid workers told the Guardian the death toll is likely to rise as recovery work continues around the Zamboye site.
Six armed people boarded and seized the Seamull tanker, also known as SIBU 1, about 136 nautical miles east of Yemen’s Al Mukalla and diverted it toward Somalia, according to UK maritime monitors. Al Jazeera notes the attack hits one of the world’s busiest trade routes and follows a renewed piracy wave that has five cargo ships currently held hostage.
Oil jumped as Trump vowed “economic warfare” against Iran and threatened penalties against countries providing cash transfers, currency swaps, or shipping support. CNBC reported Brent rising to about $93.33 a barrel and WTI to about $87.81 after the UAE suspended trade and financial transactions with Tehran over alleged missile fire.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC the department may buy back more than $4 billion per issue in longer-dated debt, saying weak liquidity in the 30-year bond means Treasury needs to “make a market.” Yields briefly eased, then rose again, with the 30-year around 5.235% and the 10-year near 4.704% as investors kept focusing on deficits, term premiums, and AI-related debt issuance.
Walmart beat fiscal second-quarter sales estimates, raised its full-year outlook, and said global e-commerce sales rose 23%, but the stock sold off as U.S. comparable sales grew less than expected. CFO John David Rainey said the company is eligible for roughly $2.9 billion in tariff refunds and plans to use the money to lower prices as shoppers remain pressured by fuel and food costs.
Alibaba posted a 75% year-over-year profit drop as capital spending rose 75% to 67.7 billion yuan, mostly for AI compute capacity and pricier chip components. Revenue still rose 9%, cloud revenue jumped 45%, and CEO Eddie Wu said AI-related product revenue delivered triple-digit growth for a twelfth straight quarter, making the quarter a clean read on how costly the Chinese AI buildout is becoming.
Micron’s AI-memory boom is remaking Boise: CNBC reports the stock has risen more than tenfold since late 2024, its market value has crossed $1 trillion, and two new fabs are expected to create more than 17,000 local jobs. The same $50 billion expansion is also straining the city with traffic, higher rents, and uneven wealth gains between Micron shareholders and residents outside the chip economy.
Quanta’s interview with Melanie Mitchell argues that AI should be studied as “alien intelligence” rather than measured by humanlike vibes of reasoning. Mitchell says the field needs better cognitive tests adapted from how scientists study babies and animals, because whether models truly reason affects how much supervision and trust real-world deployments deserve.
OpenCode is now defending OpenCode
1. wakes on schedule
2. finds scammers in our inference data
3. executes them
4. takes notes and goes to sleep

I had Claude Code for web experiment with smolvm as a code execution sandbox
Fable 5 spotted that its environment couldn't run that (no /dev/kvm)... so, without asking me first, it wrote a GitHub Actions workflow to run the experiments and pushed that directly to GitHub instead!
these rumors are unfounded
i know that pairing opencode with the unique capabilities of the cheesy gordita crunch would dominate the market
we see the vision, just not pursuing at this time
